What Could Your Company Webcast?

In many ways the uses of webcasting in business are bounded by the imagination of those seeking to implement the technology. In 2003, for instance, the U.S. Department of Defense launched a streaming video program to provide 35 hours of training to 20,000 military health care professionals on smallpox vaccinations and their administration.

Television stations routinely "simulcast" their broadcasts on their websites but the advantage of an on-demand presentation of this nature is that you'll never miss the 6 o'clock news again. It's right there on the website waiting for you whenever you get home. Recently news giant CNN introduced streaming, by-subscription video on their website capable of maintaining four simultaneous video feeds.

These few examples alone suggest that webcasts might be used to broadcast training videos, to share workshops, or to make a speaker's comments available to a larger audience. The medium is appropriate for product launches or to broadcast the proceedings of an annual board of stockholder's meeting. With this kind of broadcasting, company Internet sites become content dynamic and more appealing to a broader audience both inside and outside the organization.

Webcasts improve investor relations by delivering corporate information in a visual and more digestible format than the printed materials normally distributed. Graphics and charts that might confuse some readers can be explained in a webcast presentation and key points summarized effectively to enhance investor understanding of how the company operates and what it is or is not accomplishing.

Sales and marketing departments can utilize webcasts to launch products, to share product testimonials, and to show real-life applications for their products. In the event of product or corporate controversies or disputes, a webcast can smooth over public relations gaffes by explaining a corporate position or action and putting a human face to the corporate image.

Similarly, webcasts utilized within a company, will enhance the outreach of human resources departments in explaining new policies, educating managers on such topics as sexual harassment in the workplace, and highlighting the exceptional performance of given employees. Studies have shown that when information of this kind is presented in well-produced, audio-visual form it is more meaningful to the employees and they are more likely to remember and to incorporate the data into their work and management strategies.

Increasingly "company webcast" may be an item on a business communication plan. The media contains rich possibilities for enhancing consumer and public relations and strengthening internal contacts in a company. By embracing webcasting, companies acknowledge the Internet's power to move information in new, significant ways.
