Problems With Streaming Video

My Problem is with a Firewall. What Do I Do? Firewalls are used to protect your system against malicious inbound traffic but sometimes they also get in the way of things you want to see, like streaming video. If you are having streaming problems with Norton firewall or some other personal firewall system there are two things you can try.
First, simply turn off you firewall. If you are unwilling to do this, and don't know how to alter the firewall's configuration to allow the specific content, you can try these strategies with different media players.
WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER
In the Windows Media Player (versions 7-9) click on "Tools" and select "Options." Click the "Network" tab and locate the area for "Proxy Settings." Double click on "HTTP Browser" and select the "use browser proxy settings" option. Click OK and then OK again.
Real Player
With Real Player streaming video problems are resolved in similar fashion for both the Real One and Real Player Basic versions of the software.

In the Real One player click "Tools" and select "Preferences." Click on the "Proxy" tab and under "Streaming Settings" click "Change Settings." Make sure the "No Proxy" button is selected.

In Real Player Basic 8, click "View" and select "Preferences." Click on the "Proxy" tab and select the button for "use my web browser's HTTP proxy." Then click OK.
QuickTime Player
Problems are rare with the Apple Quicktime. Streaming video player reliability is good with this software. If you do experience problems, click "Edit" and then "Preferences" and choose "Quicktime Preferences." Click "Advanced" and make sure "Automatic" streaming is selected.

Problems with streaming video are usually easy to overcome. Many issues are related to your computer's security, such as the firewall. (In the corporate setting where your firewall may be hardware-based you may need to speak to your system administrator.) Video streaming problems are growing rarer with faster computers and the prevalence of broadband. Consequently this form of delivery continues to grow rapidly.
