How Is Streaming Video Recorder Different From Video Conferencing?

Making content available through Streaming audio and streaming video recorder differs from video conferencing in that viewing streaming media is a one way transmission. The file comes to the user who listens to or views the material.
In video conferencing, the exchange is two-way requiring the use of software or hardware based codecs to compress and decompress the digital stream between two or more points. The standards used in this process are much more mature than in streaming content which is, more times than not, basically a file download.

Real time streamed content, of course, is a different matter. Delivered via real time streaming protocol (RTSP) from a special server, it is an expensive process in which the server often adjusts the rate of data transmission on the fly and content does not "come down to" the user's computer for storage.

Are both Audio and Video Streaming Reliable?

Current Rating
Normally audio streaming offers the fewest problems because of smaller file size. The data will even transmit well over a dial-up modem connection. Video streaming on the other hand is more temperamental and can be subject to interruption by Internet traffic jams, a slow computer, or security software such as a firewall. This results in a jerky stream that often stops for several seconds and the quality of the video will be poor.

What if I'm Interested in Delivering Streaming Content?

For those interested in producing their own streaming audio and video content, there are a number of packages available.
VDOLIVE
VDOLive, created by VDOnet Corporation, is a server based, "true streaming," architecture that adjusted transmission protocols to the ability of the viewer's connection as they watch content. Video plays in real time with no delay for downloading.
STREAMWORKS
The Streamworks encoder and server software allows for both live broadcast and on-demand streaming. It does limit access to a fixed number of users and requires a connection of 112kbs or better. At this bandwidth it delivers quarter screen video at 30 framers per second.
VOSAIC
Vosaic separates the audio and video streams and feeds them to a Java-based client that can be run on any web server. In the presence of high bandwidth it produces 15 to 30 frames per second. Reviewers tend to feel that performance is mixed at best with this product.
REALAUDIO
Long a leader in delivering streaming content, RealAudio, via its Helix server, offers multi-format, cross platform streaming with high quality and good reliability. Based on its compact use of bandwidth and good content control, RealAudio is at the top of the streaming media game.

With the proliferation of these methods for delivering content and with available software to record streaming audio and video we will be seeing more free streaming audio and video content and it will change the face of the entertainment industry.
